Last summer, my uncle Pablo decided to walk from the north of the country to the south to money for the hospital that had looked after my grandmother. Most of his friends thought he would give after a few days, but he was determined to finish. He walked about twenty-five kilometres a day and the night in small hotels, at campsites and sometimes in the homes of people he met on the way. The hardest part was the weather. For one whole week it rained without stopping, and his boots never had a chance to dry. But people were very kind. Strangers often stopped him in the street to give him food or to him good luck. After seven weeks he finally reached the south coast, where the whole family was waiting for him. In the end, he collected more than £8,000, which was twice the amount he had for.
