Four people describe changing career in their thirties

Priya

For ten years I worked as an accountant for a big firm in the city. The pay was excellent, but I spent most evenings feeling that I hadn’t achieved anything I could actually touch. I started going to an evening woodwork class, mainly to get out of the house, and found I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Even so, I didn’t leave my job straight away. I spent two years making furniture at weekends and selling it to friends, just to see whether people would really pay for it. When my orders were regularly covering my rent, I finally handed in my notice. My parents were horrified; they’d paid for my degree and thought I was throwing it away. Now I earn about half what I used to, and I do miss being able to book a holiday without checking my bank balance first. But I wake up looking forward to the day.
