Competitive sport in schools
Compare viewpoints across four writers
Writer A, PE teacher
A PE teacher with long experience of school teams gives her view of competitive sport.
I have coached school teams for twenty years, and I still believe a hard-fought defeat teaches children more than any assembly on perseverance. Learning to shake hands with the side that has just beaten you, and to turn up for training the following week, is how resilience is actually built. But I am under no illusions about the children at the other end of the spectrum. For a pupil who is always picked last, a competitive lesson is a weekly public humiliation, and many of them quietly decide that sport is not for people like them. That does not mean abandoning team games, which remain the backbone of a good PE programme and the main reason many pupils love the subject. It does mean being careful about the touchline, where I have seen parents shout things at eleven-year-olds that would get an adult removed from a professional ground.
Which writer has a different view from the others on how competition affects children who are not naturally good at sport?
Which writer shares D’s opinion about whether losing helps children to become resilient?
Which writer expresses a similar view to B about what PE lessons should focus on?
Which writer has a different view from the others on how parents behave at school sports events?
