From Tree to Paper
an industrial process
After being cleaned and sometimes bleached, the pulp is mixed with water and sprayed onto a moving screen, where the fibres begin to bond as the water drains away.
Most paper today is made from wood, but turning a tree into a sheet of paper takes several stages.
Finally, the wet sheet passes between heated rollers that press and dry it, and the finished paper is wound onto huge reels.
These chips are then broken down, either by grinding or by cooking them with chemicals, until the wood separates into a soft mass of fibres called pulp.
First, logs are stripped of their bark and cut into small chips.
