This week we are looking at changes in the way people work. A number of companies have tested a four-day workweek, in which employees work fewer days but receive the same pay. Some managers say this makes workers more productive, while others worry about the costs. Should more companies adopt a four-day workweek? Why or why not?
I think they should. People who have an extra day to rest are less likely to burn out, and they often focus better when they are at work. Companies could also attract talented employees by offering this benefit, especially when it is hard to find good staff.
It might work for office jobs, but not for every business. Hospitals, stores and restaurants need staff every day, so they would have to hire more people to cover the missing day. That would raise their costs, and customers would probably end up paying higher prices.
