Plastic waste is one of the topics we have been studying in this unit. Some governments have responded by banning single-use plastic items such as bags, straws, and takeaway containers. Others prefer to keep these products legal but invest heavily in better recycling systems. Which approach do you think is more effective for reducing plastic pollution: banning single-use plastics or improving recycling? Explain your reasons.
I think bans work better. Even in countries with good recycling systems, only a small share of plastic actually gets recycled. The rest is burned, buried, or ends up in the ocean. If we stop producing the item in the first place, we do not have to worry about what happens to it afterward.
I prefer improving recycling. Bans often just replace plastic with other materials, like paper bags, which need a lot of water and energy to produce. Plastic is also very useful, for example in keeping food fresh. A good recycling system lets us keep the benefits of plastic while reducing the waste.
